45mm x 35mm . Nephrite Jade

Another piece I carved in New Zealand. I LOVE this particular type of nephrite. It's very translucent, it's not too hard (So it doesn't take forever to carve) but it's not so soft that you have to worry about it crumbling or gouging. The only down side is that you have to be careful of those little black spots because they are harder than the green. But it's so pretty :) it has a specific Maori name that I could never remember. I dubbed it 'kiwi fruit' jade, because thats what it looks like, and by the end of the year the whole class was using my name for it and it was spreading to the professional carvers in town, so I may be responsible for a new colloquial name for it :boogie:

This item is currently for sale [link] All proceeds go towards getting my own carving equipment :D

It's awesome! Such precision and smooth flow - that under-carving for the twist-over must be really hard to do well!

Thanks :)

The cut under was difficult, most of the tools were just the wrong shape to try and cut at that angle, or they felt like they were, and I was determined to have a continuous 'roundness' to it rather than just the thin 'slit' that most carvers put in for this form. I learnt a lot from making this piece

Thanks. Yes twists are difficult. I had to keep stopping and re-figuring out where I needed to carve

Eventually I'd like to try carving a stone chain, I've seen a lot of them in ancient chinese jade carvings, all carved from one piece with no breaks, and I think carving one would be a challenge. Maybe not the artiest thing to do, but I want to see if I can do it...
