Material - Nephrite Jade Size - 25 x 25 x 25mm This is one of those items I make simply to see if it can be done. My teacher really tried to stop me when she saw the design, because she thought it would be too hard... To tell the truth I found it to be one of the most straight-forward projects I made that year! The design was inspired by those 'impossible shapes' that abound in optical illusion pictures (hence the name). If (when!) I manage to get my own carving equipment I intend to explore the concept further, maybe even make a series. This is one of those extremely difficult objects to photograph, simply because it is aggressivly 3D and looks different from every angle, as you will see if you take a peek at the link up there |

It looks great in your link with all the other views too.
What sort of tools did you use to make this?
From what I recall, certain types of jade are pretty hard.

Watch out for the FIRE BREATHING SOCKS!!
They prey on those who don't visit Cantaloupe Bliss...

I used big grinding wheels and some smaller burrs for the corners (all diamond grinders of course), and a lot of water. This is one of the harder varieties of jade, I don't think I'd have tried this design with a softer stone, it would break. As it is this one handled it a little too well and I had to round off the edges slightly because I kept cutting myself on them!
