Artist's Comments

Nephrite Jade 7.2cm x 2.5cm (2.84 x 0.98 inches). Hand knotted cord. Sterling Silver spiral catch.

I don't want to say too much about this one, because I think it speaks for itself. So I'll just say that of all the stone carvings I have done, this is my favourite. It is mine and I wear it a lot, mostly in Summer, because it seems to really suit summer clothes.
I just now made it a new cord as the last one was getting a little overworn (which is why I hadn't photographed/submitted it until now ;) ).

:flame: Wow that's a beautiful piece of jade. Excellent work. What type of tools do you use for carving?

Thankyou :)
Sigh, not even close. It's mid-winter, I've forgotten what my toes feel like!

Thankyou

To carve jade (and most other hardstone) you need 'diamond' grinding tools and water.

:flame: I know, I've done my fair share of lapidary - cabs, faceting, and carving. :)

I was curious if you used a Dremel/Foredom-like tool or files/wheeled/flat lap machines and what you used for a polishing agent - diamond also or tin/cerium/etc. oxides?

It's really pretty, I almost thought it was made out of polymer when I first looked at it

I don't mean to sound superior, but I hate the company of robots

Ah, a fellow carver! For this one I used a combo of 8" wheels on a machine to rough it out, a dremel and files for the rest. To polish I actually just wet sanded it up to a 1600 grit. For jade I prefer not to use the polishes, I think it makes it way too shiny, like glass, and the reflections interfere with the design. Thats just my preference tho, In the course where I learnt carving they actually wanted us to use two polishing agents. A diamond one (crystalline-A, I think it was called) and then a tin oxide. You could make a Jade mirror using that combo ;)

:flame: Thank you for the added information.

I think discussing the process of how you carved this piece really adds to the understanding of the public and boosts their appreciation of the craft. :)

...and now I need to sort through my slabs and get working on that jade mirror idea. ;)
